When I look at human history and what is happening on the planet, God appears to me as a figure whom humans use to manipulate their fellow beings and justify their wars! And, in a dream, he tells me he agrees with me. 🙂

In practice—if one can speak of facts here—some describe a God of love and forgiveness, while others envision a vindictive god who keeps a tally of deeds. Others speak instead of multiple deities, sometimes allied and sometimes in conflict. Some find greater resonance in an inner, personal spirituality. In short, a wide range of concepts regarding God or a higher power has long existed across the spectrum of beliefs.

While conflicts exist between different religious, mystical, and spiritual sensibilities, there is also ample room for "wars of interpretation" within a single religion—since most religions are divided into various denominations. To name but a few examples: Catholics, Protestants, and "born-again Christians" among Christians; Sephardic, Ashkenazi, and Mizrahi Jews; or Sunnis, Shiites, and Sufis among Muslims. In short, the sources of conflict are numerous and complex, especially when one considers the sheer number of existing religions and beliefs (1).

The other conception, which I quite like, is more scientific. It is the god of Einstein and Spinoza. God is, in a sense, nature—the order of the world and the universe. It is not a person, as often depicted in major religions, but an indefinable entity that is everything and in everything at once.

It is a different concept. Yet, we can embrace it without denying our existing beliefs, since most religions hold that God is everywhere. And if God is the Universe, then he truly is everywhere—far more so than a white-bearded sage rushing back and forth to set everything right.

In conclusion, humanity must mature and take responsibility, so as not to destroy itself in the name of beliefs and manipulation that cloud its judgment. That is the wise course of action.
