We're tired of Donald Trump's political tweets, where statements are retracted or reversed according to his moods. He challenges long-established principles, conventions, and agreements, such as borders and international treaties, based solely on his beliefs, endangering the social, economic, and political foundations of the 20th century. If we continue to analyze his daily mood swings, we risk losing sight of the long-term stakes. Trump's executive orders blind us to what's really going on. So, in a move of lucidity, even though I follow the news, I've decided not to comment on the day-to-day in order to maintain a degree of lucidity.
Far from no longer writing about sociopolitics, I will instead adopt a new stance that gives greater importance to culture; a tool that allows us to go to another level of analysis and understanding of the world. Our angles of sociopolitical (Societas Criticus) and cultural (DI) analysis will thus come together in a kind of « DI Societas » starting with this issue. This does not change our name (1), but it better defines our approach for these uncertain times, because we often find our roots in culture.
Note
1. Previously, we used to use Portail D.I.
Societas (D.I. Societas Portal) or Groupe D.I. Societas
(D.I. Societas Group) on our web pages, for example, but we
used Societas Criticus, revue de critique sociale et
politique (Societas Criticus, journal of social and political
criticism), and D.I. revue d’actualité et de culture
(D.I. journal of current affairs and culture) in our library
version. Depending on whether an issue was more political or
cultural, we could vary these names. Starting with issue 26-03, the
first change: under our Montreal photo, we wrote DI Societas,
online journal, archive version for libraries, because the Societas
Criticus journal has two sections: Societas Criticus, revue de
critique sociale et politique et D.I., Délinkan Intellectuel,
revue d'actualité et de culture. This therefore needed to be
reflected. In the header, however, we had kept the name Societas
Criticus as a generic name, but since Societas Criticus
and DI Societas are synonymous to represent the whole for us,
it became normal to use these two names. This shift toward a more
cultural angle in our analyses allows us to do just that. We now use
the words Societas Criticus / DI Societas on all our pages. We also
took the opportunity to include on our front page the words found on
our website: « A different perspective since 1999 »,
because they situate us in time.
